Bridal Blurbs: Planning a Millennial Wedding in a Traditional Environment

I have attended a few weddings as a child; almost all of these were as a flower girl. There was one wedding I remember every bit of detail—shiny, puffy-sleeved bridal gown with colorful trimmings, teased bridal hair, and the grand entrance of the couple with swords and flames and, uh, a marching band? My flower girl attire was a beautiful satin gown with semi-puffed sleeves and little flowers on my chest, and oh boy that dress made me itch so much!

That’s ’90s wedding for you, from a six-year-old flower girl’s perspective.I never thought about how my wedding will look, how I want my wedding dress, or what decors to have until I opened a Pinterest account in 2011. All I knew about weddings back then were the traditions that came with it and its significance in legally binding a relationship between a man and a woman, and more recently, between two individuals regardless of gender.

It would be fitting to call our wedding a millennial wedding. I would like to define it as a wedding custom-fit for the couple, cutting out “unnecessary” traditions and keeping ones that matter, and adding a touch of technology, current trends, and the personalities of the bride and groom.

Wedding planning is crazy, and it’s more cray to arrange a millennial wedding around Filipino wedding traditions most people are accustomed to. Sure, there will always be couples who will opt for a cookie-cutter type of wedding, but there are a number of couples who will veer away from traditions, or at the very least, will only pick the relevant ones to respect the culture they are in as homage to history and tradition, whether it’s a family or a cultural thing. Some couples may even describe it as a tug-of-war between them and their very traditional parents and/or relatives who may insist on doing things the way they did it in the past because it worked for them and it should work for the couple as well.

What makes a millennial wedding? Is it really required nowadays to subscribe to the modern way of planning a wedding, or do we just go the traditional way of doing things? Let’s break it down, shall we?

Traditional Invites vs. E-Invites

It is customary that couple who are planning to wed to send our invites at least three weeks before the wedding. Those who have been invited to weddings in the past years may have received physical invitations with embossed flowers and actual ribbons on shiny, scented paper, with quotes from the bride and groom printed somewhere on the invite. That would be enough back then, but nowadays, engaged couples have the option to send out save-the-date cards a year before the wedding, followed by the formal invite. The formal invite, depending on the couple’s preference or budget, may be printed out or sent digitally through e-mail or posted on the couple’s preferred events page platform. Some couples, on the other hand, opt to just send soft copies of their wedding invites online, saving on printing and mailing costs.

Wedding Communications

Phone calls and broadsheet publications are still the best way to announce a couple’s engagement. I still remember when I was younger, I would check my parents’ favorite newspaper for newly-married and affianced couples and I thought it was cool to have your wedding announced through that medium. But you know, as I grew older, my plans changed with what’s #trending, so I announced our engagement on Facebook and Instagram just hours after I was given the ring—well, that’s because both our families knew my then-boyfriend-now-husband was going to propose on that day!

Apart from our Facebook event page, we also made a website that contained maps, venue information, and some more details that will help them get around and be comfortable on our wedding. Digital media is a very effective tool to communicate with guests, entourage, and even suppliers, and relay important messages that may be useful on the wedding day.

Because of technological advancements, couples will not have a hard time collecting photos from friends and family post-event. Couples can get extra creative by utilizing hashtags for their event. Say, if a couple named Joey and Doris are getting married this year, they may use the hashtags #JoeyMayNowKissDoris2017, or something more witty or catchy. Hashtags included in the caption make it easy for newlyweds to see moments captured on their special day by friends.

Bespoke wedding

My husband and I made do with very few traditions. We made sure that we had the pamamanhikan before everything was cast in stone. I followed the customary something blue, something new, something borrowed, and something old, no pearl earrings on wedding day, and to have flowers in church no matter how bloody expensive it was to get from the lone accredited supplier! Despite those, we did not have a dove release ceremony because we thought it was cheesy. No bouquet and garter throwing because we don’t want only the single guests to have fun; instead, we had a Minute-to-Win-it inspired game so that everyone, including married and very young guests can enjoy! I also wore a champagne-colored gown instead of a labang-Tide white because I feel that it doesn’t fit my personality and body type!

Some people may say that you won’t lose anything if you follow traditions or superstitions, but if practicality or your personal values reigns over it, by all means, go against it. For example, brides are told not to wear their wedding gown prior to their wedding. What if the bride booked a couturier with zero professional background and receives a gown that doesn’t fit? What if the bride suddenly contracts an illness that may cause her to bloat or lose a tremendous amount of weight? Consider the risks you will be taking should you decide to follow such pamahiins, and know your options before submitting yourself to or against it.

But in every wedding–be it a very traditional one or a modern-day millennial wedding–we should not forget the love between us and our respective partners, and the beautiful lives we are to live together, for better and for worse, forever and ever.

WaW Before I Do: Do your duty!

We want to get intimate with you in this article by discussing a very beautiful act and yet a highly discreet topic: SEX.

You see, during the wedding, the guests brings their gift for the newlyweds as their way of helping them start off their married life. God gives more than a gift. He gives the newlyweds the blessing of sex. Sex here is not the taboo one but a beautiful way to become one with your spouse. It is the best form of communication and intimacy. I know many (not all) couples already pre-opened this gift and tried it before the wedding. This gift may not excite them as much. But for many who waited – this is precious because sex is a true form of worship to God under the blessings of marriage. On their wedding day God gives them their blessing to go forth and multiply.

We’ve heard about it and probably watched it in movies… husband asking the wife for sex and she gives excuses like “I’m tired” or “I have a headache” or vice versa. Whenever Monique and I do counseling, one of the first questions we ask is “How is sex life?”. This usually catches them off-guard but it’s an important question because more than their issues, it gives us a hint on the real health of their marriage.

Let’s see what the Bible says:

The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” ??1 Corinthians? ?7:3-5? ?NIV??

So what can we learn from this?

1. Sex is not only a gift but a duty. I know it’s best when it’s given freely but unfortunately, in our experience as counselors many couples don’t get enough sex. One of the first real warning sign of marriage failure is that sex becomes less frequent.

2. After marriage your body is not your own – Here is the bad news: it is now conjugal property! Your body is now shared with your spouse. But don’t worry – Your spouse’s is yours as well and last time I checked, 50% + 50% is still 100%. So serve each other by providing time for sex. Don’t wait to be asked, initiate if you must.

3. Sex is pleasurable. Keep enjoying it by exploring ways to give each other satisfaction and joy. So do not limit yourselves into a monotonous acts. Be adventurous.

4. Putting it off is not permanent – God knows there will be times when you really can’t do it – you’ve got deadlines, you are sick or whatever that is (not in the mood is not an excuse)… when you do that, it has to mutually agreed upon and the rescheduled. Example: “I’m sorry hon, I’ve got deadlines I need to finish tonight. Can we do it tomorrow?”

5. Sex is safeguarding – Whenever I go on my long trips its a must that before I leave we have to “do it”, it’s sort of like pa-baon. God’s word says, you have to have sex so you will stay away from temptation. Imagine doing grocery while hungry, your bill probably goes up right because as you went through each lane, everything was just so good. Try going there on a full stomach, you’d probably ignore the things you don’t really need. Sex is like that, when you are well fed at home, there is a likely chance you will get tempted outside.

Sex is beautiful… My encouragement for couples is have a healthy married life by not ignoring your sex life.

WaW Before I Do: The Importance of Wise Counsel

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]There was a guy working in our office who discovered that his wife was cheating on him.  He called me for some advice and after hearing him out I told him to give his wife a chance but to make sure she is repentant and that the affair was over. He started crying and said “I’ve asked advice from so many friends and all of them said the same thing — leave her! but after hearing you, yours made the most sense.”  So, he followed my advice and got back together.

Proverbs 11:14 says “Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory.”

Not only in Marriage but anything that we do, it is always good to have good advisors around you. You can never be too good or too experienced to not need one.  And a trusted adviser, gives us a third person perspective about the situation and shows us our blind spots.

Here is a sad fact: There are no schools (at least in the Philippines) that offer courses on how to be a better husband, wife or parent.  So, who or where do you go to for advice? With the # of cases of broken families, sometimes we can only look into what we’ve seen in our flawed homes for guidance.

As a wedding supplier, I see that many couples would rather spend time meeting with their wedding supplier and planning the wedding, than to learn about improving their marriage. Let me wake you up to this fact – “What good will your great memories be, should your marriage fail?”

I remember 2 couples who siblings whose wedding I both shot, eventually one of them goes up to me to ask “Would it be possible for us to have 2 albums?” when asked why he explains “because my brother already broke up with the wife and since they won’t need the album anymore we were thinking of just using it.” that was less than a year since their wedding.

So where do you find these wise counsels?

  1. Books, blogs, websites & Podcasts – If you are the type who is either busy or shy to open up to a real person or group, this is the best place to check out and they are all over the net.  Now the challenge is how can you tell if you can really trust it and that it’s opinion is based on unbiased truth.
  2. Your God parents (principal sponsors) – the fact that newlyweds usually need a lot a lot of guidance probably is the reason why we have a tradition of having god parents (principal sponsors) that are not practiced anywhere else in the world.  Unfortunately, though, with a lot of weddings, it has been a showcase of who you know rather than who can you count on to help you just in case.  They get celebrities, politicians and other prominent or popular people who I have nothing against unless they are nowhere to be found anymore after the wedding.  Keep in mind that when choosing your god parents, that they should be:
    1. People who are wiser and more experienced than you.
    2. Cares for you as individuals and as a couple (will not take sides) and
    3. will make themselves available on a regular basis (or at least in case you need them).
  3. Support group – a bunch of couples who are on the same stage or phase as you who commit to meet on a regular basis.  This is usually called by different names: dgroup (short for discipleship group), cell group, small group or household but actually means the same thing. This is led by a leader called discipler or mentor or coach who facilitates the discussion and picks a topic that is discussed. There are two types of discussion – a life on life wherein people share what they’re going through whether good or bad and people voice out their encouragements or praises or lessons wherein the leader teaches a topic that ends with a discussion. Should you
  4. Retreats / Marriage encounters / Conferences – Monique & I make it a point to be able to attend one every year. Having it acts as a recharge point for our marriage and don’t be turned off in case they talk about the same thing year after year.  Yes, the topics may be the same but we are people of reminder.  We need to be reminded regularly and usually, the topics speak to us differently depending on what season we are in our life.
  5. Pre-Marital Education – Did you know by taking your pre-cana or attending a pre-marital workshop you are lowering the chance of divorce (or annulment) from 50 to 19%?  If one of you do not want or not agree to go through one, I sincerely believe this to be a big warning sign. How serious are you in making this work? For sure, every marriage will have its own issues and problems — so why not get ready for it? Don’t fool yourself that you can do it on your own.

If you are just planning your wedding, talk about these 5 things now and agree that you will not wait for any problem before seeking counsel.  Just like in physical sickness, the best cure is prevention.

Being products of failed marriages ourselves, Monique and I have committed to equipping couples through the Before & After I do workshop (beforeidoworkshop.com) which we do at least twice a year, by making ourselves available for counsel & advice in person and online, through the Christ Commission Fellowship (CCF) Family ministry and our weekly couples DGroup.  Coincidentally, we are going to do our next Before I Do on Feb 26, 2017 in Robinson’s Magnolia where we will talk about “Marriage on Fire”.

WaW Before I Do: 5 Questions Couples Must Ask Before They Tie The Knot

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Before they marry, specially in the few days prior, couples are often faced by multitudes of questions.  Some of these questions are ok to be left unanswered as they are not as toxic or as harmful as some.  These are questions that are just part of the wedding jitters but there are some that should never ever be brushed aside because these are supposed to trigger warning signs should you be not ready.

I know it’s been said before to almost all people getting married that “any sign of doubt, you should put off the wedding” but out of every 100 weddings, how many do you think gets set aside until smoke clears out? One or maybe not even.  Usually, we pay more attention to the stronger feeling of (1) Shame – what will people say?  We’ve already sent out invites, (2) Waste – we’ve already spent so much and (3) Confidence – maybe its just part of getting married and we’ll just sort it out once we are there.

Well, do me a favor and keep the questions that I mention… dwell on it and be sure of your answers.

  1. Am I really ready? – Did I give this decision enough thought and prayer? Being ready is not just to receive but to let go. Like what?  Hobbies, friends, lifestyle & relatives!  I am not saying ignore them totally but to fix your priorities and make your spouse #2 in your life.
  2. Do I really know my partner? – There are different levels of knowing…  sometimes, people use their hearts too much and leave so much to be risked.  Did you give the relationship enough time for you to know not only the good points but the bad points.  Realize that just like a car, problems don’t usually manifest or show up early on.  Many traits are triggered by situations and so to know each other truly you should have gone through different situations in life.  These are recessed characteristics that are rarely triggered but must be known.  How is your partner during these situations (there are more actually)?:
    1. He loses money
    2. There is conflict of ideas
    3. drunk?
    4. Made to wait
    5. Irritated
  3. Do I really trust my partner? – Is he what he says he is or are there kept secrets? How do you know? Have you met the future in-laws and the best friends?  Have you pointed out your person of peace?
  4. Are we ready in all aspects? – all means ALL!
    1. Financially – Are there debts that need to be settled?  Have we actually done financial planning on how income and expenses would look once we live together?
    2. Physically – Any Sickness I need to be aware of? I know some people who after a year of marriage have become widows.  Aside from health, are we both physically capable of fulfilling our roles as husband & wife? These include plan Bs for kids in case we can’t bear one.
    3. Mentally – Do we agree that we both want to do this will all our heart, mind and soul?
    4. Legally – Are we of legal age and have we fixed up everything that needed to be fixed?  Hopefully not pre-marital agreements but similar to those things.
    5. Spiritually – Did I get my parents blessing, do we share the same faith and beliefs?
  5. Do I know my responsibilities & am do I accept them? Some people don’t know at all but some know but don’t accept thinking they’ll find a way around it or that they must be an exception but the worse part is, some people think they know but they actually don’t.  These are people who think that marriage is easy because they see only the good side of it.  Don’t take me wrong, marriage is good… but I believe, marriage is good only when the husband and wife loves and lives in harmony.  Then marriage feels like a blessing…

So if you seriously used the questions above to figure out whether you are with the right person or this is the right time or situation, then you probably got some warning signs up.  Now what are you to do about these?  While I do believe that “No one is really 100% ready” as they walk down the altar.  I being an entrepreneur also believe that you don’t just ignore them.  Discuss them with your fiancee and come up with an attack plan.  It would be suicidal to just keep them to yourself and think everything will fix itself (cause it won’t).  Now I know some will do that thinking it might freak their spouse saying “You are calling off the wedding just because of an article you read?” but they won’t and they shouldn’t! and if they do — well then that’s another warning sign for you.

There’s more valid questions but I believe these are my top 5s.  What are yours?

WaW Dinner Part 2

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Mimma Benz has always been generous to us WaWies. She will not hesitate to set aside a portion of her hectic schedule just to be with us, unless she has something important to attend to. You will really see her eyes sparkle with excitement whenever she’s with her WaWies and NaWies (Newlyweds at Work). Since we’re very spoiled, she’s giving us the opportunity to meet some of the wedding industry’s best suppliers. Kaya’t hindi ko na pinalampas itong second WaW Dinner, because I felt really sad when I wasn’t able to attend the first one.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/2ndWaWDinner3.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Anyway, just like the first WaW dinner, everyone brought their share of potluck food. We’ve had crispy pata, buttered chicken, barbecue, pancit malabon, shrimp, kakanin, ice cream, micro greens, and cake! Yum! The wedding supplier hosts this time were Phoeben and Gen Teocson (videographer). They were joined by fellow suppliers Paul Vincent and his wife Ayvih (photographer), and Queen David and husband David (coordinator).

My fiancé and I have never met any of these suppliers before, but we were warmly welcomed like we’ve been friends with them for so long. Feeling close ako agad sa kanila. Haha! The house was homey and comfortable. We immediately felt at-home as soon as we entered. Can I just say that we particularly loved the sala, dining area, and the restroom with a guestbook? Hahaha.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/2ndWaWDinner1.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Once settled, Mimma introduced everyone and the unforgettable dining experience started with the sharing of our love stories.

Kim and Ryan Joseph (RJ) – to marry in December 2018[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/2ndWaWDinner5.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Their love story left us all mind-blown! Peace, Kim and RJ! Haha! Kim admitted that she was the first one who saw RJ ten years ago, and she said she knew – right then and there – that he is The One. Everyone suddenly looked at RJ like he was some matinee idol who got engaged with his number one fan. Hahaha. Their love story is so colorful that we are really glad they made it through the obstacles.

From Kim: “Thanks so much for the dinner we had so much fun and na-appreciate talaga namin lahat ng kwento, words of advice and existential questions posed by David and Phoeben. Hehe!”

Jessa and John Paul (JP) – to marry in July 2017[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/2ndWaWDinner2.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]It was unfortunate that JP was unable to join us that night. We were all surprised to find out that JP was the one planning their wedding. Jessa said that it was even him who told her to join WaW. Personally, I find Jessa lucky that her fiancé is actively helping her with the wedding preps. Rarely will you see a guy like him. JP is based in Singapore, and they have been in a Long Distance Relationship for three years.

From Jessa: “Thank you sa lahat ang daming learnings and realizations. Haha! Ang dami kong tanong na nasagot. Ang sarap mag chickahan pag wedding ang topic. Excited na ako for our prenup, ako pala talaga ang mauunang ga-graduate. <3”

Melly and Franz – to marry in February 2018[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/2ndWaWDinner4.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Well, that’s me and my fiancé. Haha. We met in a boxing gym eight years ago. Franz told them I was the one who first set eyes on him, but promise siya talaga yung nauna. Hahaha. We’ve had our share of ups and downs, as well, and we are just grateful to finally be on our road to forever. Naks!

Below were the tips we got from our hosts that night:

(Disclaimer: These are not verbatim statements. They were typed based on how I understood their points.)

On Booking Suppliers:

  • The teamwork is better when you book suppliers who have previously worked with each other in the past, and have no issues between them.
  • Booking early can be a pro or a con. Some couples tend to be fickle-minded, and end up spending more money because they keep on dropping and booking suppliers. Research, research, research.
  • Book suppliers that fit your personalities. No matter how popular and talented the supplier is, if you won’t click, you should not book them.

On Prenup/Engagement Photo Shoots:

  • Get a prenup/engagement photo shoot session because you want to it, and not just because it is part of the package.
  • No matter how gorgeous you look or how pretty the venue/set design is, if you will not give your 100 percent, then the results will never be as outstanding as you expect them to be.

On Prenup/Engagement Stylist:

  • You can show your/your stylist’s pegs to your photographer/videographer, but do not expect them to do exactly as they were shown. Remember that you are hiring a photographer/videographer because you like their styles.
  • It is up to you whether you will hire a prenup stylist. Photographers/videographers are capable enough to help you with the conceptualization and direction.

On Wedding Preps:

  • Keep your communication lines open. The wedding preparation stage will also prepare you for married life, so teamwork is crucial.

On Wedding Invitations:

  • Set aside budget for extra invitations. Going back to your supplier for additional prints will cost you more time and money.

On Forming Your Entourage:

  • Never assume that your entourage members are all willing to shoulder the cost of their gowns and/or set aside a day for measurements and fittings. Before including them into your final entourage list, make sure to let them know about your plans and expectations.

On Wedding Day Bloopers:

  • Let go and stay positive on your wedding day. Everybody will feel your stress. It will show in your photos, too.

On Cocktails:

  • Invest in cocktails. Never assume that your guests will feel full after the cocktails, and not eat the dinner served to them.

On Making Memories:

  • Many suppliers love overseas weddings because they are usually more intimate. They remember weddings that are filled with genuine love. Couples, nowadays, tend to focus on making their wedding a big production, and forget about the true meaning of this event: to celebrate their marriage with loved ones.
  • Your wedding day will move swiftly like a second had just passed. Wouldn’t it be nice to spend most of the day bonding with your loved ones, instead of focusing too much on the details? Learn to let go and enjoy the day with your guests.

On Family Conflicts:

  • It is the responsibility of the couple to inform their families about what will happen on the wedding day to avoid violent reactions and conflicts.
  • Inform your coordinator ahead of time if there are family issues that they need to know.
  • Do not be too pushy with what you want, and completely ignore the sentiments of your family/in-laws. Marriage is a buy one, get all. You will marry your spouse’s family, as well. Never start your married life with bad vibes, just because of misunderstandings.

On Budgeting:

  • Couples always overlook the budget for crew meals, and incidentals like bridal car rental extension fees.
  • Review your contract to check your supplier’s crew meal requirement. If it is stated that the meal is already included in the contract price, it usually just covers their dinner. It’s best to discuss this with your supplier ahead of time, so you can both prepare for it – especially if you decide to give cash allowances instead of packed meals.

On Ceremony Time:

  • The groom should arrive 10 minutes BEFORE the invitation time. If your ceremony will start at 3PM, but your invitation time is 2:30PM, then the groom should be there at 2:20PM or earlier.

On Hiring Hair and Makeup Artist (HMUA):

  • Hire a reliable HMUA. Remember that the day starts with your HMUA. If they arrive late, then the whole itinerary will be affected.
  • For the entourage hair and makeup, the groom and his family should be the first batch to be made up because they will also be the first group to be photographed.

On Bridal Boudoir:

  • If you would like to have a bridal boudoir session before leaving for the ceremony, make sure to inform your coordinator in advance, so they can adjust the itinerary.

On Bridal Car:

  • Rent a bridal car for four hours, instead of three.

On RSVP:

  • Normally, only 80 percent of those who RSVP-ed attend the wedding.

On Buffer Tables:

  • Never ever assign guests to the buffer table.

On Dropping Suppliers:

  • Be honest with them. Tell them the true reason why you are letting them go, and not some made-up excuses.

On Same-Day-Edits (SDEs):

  • Be yourselves. Huwag yung masyadong scripted. At the end of the day, when you watch your SDE, think about this: “Kayo ba talaga yan?”

Yes, these were the topics that we covered that night, and yet we still felt that the five-hour discussion was not enough. The dinner party was so fun that we had a few more minutes of extra chit-chats outside the Teocsons’ house before we finally parted ways. Saying goodbye was really difficult that night, but the memories will forever be part of our lives. Naks!

WaW is one of the reasons why our wedding preps is fun and exciting. We get to meet suppliers and fellow soon-to-weds, and we gain new friendships in the process. Thank you so much to Mimma Benz for coming up with the WaW Dinner idea. We would also like to thank the wedding suppliers who made commendable efforts just to meet us and answer our questions.

We hope that there will be more of these meet-ups in the future. So for our fellow WAWies who have not joined the previous dinners, the experience is totally worth the eyebags and traffic!

WaW Supplier’s Potluck Lunch

It is during this time when you will hear of back-to-back-to-back events being the norm for all professionals in this industry. However, before the December madness settled in this year, some of the industry’s suppliers met up at The Mango Farm and discussed the state of the Philippine wedding industry. They discussed how they could improve the services that they offered and how they could adapt to a fluid and competitive market.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/W@WSuppliersPotluck2.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]There are fresher takes on photographs and more personal ways coordinators make their presence known. It has come to a point where new services that haven’t been thought about before are now being offered. She gave a tip that even if it’s a simple reply explaining that you’ll get back to them because you’re at an event works wonders. She followed up that with a comment that it’s absolutely necessary that you actually do text them the moment that you’re finished with the event because they will remember when you forget to do so.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Paul Vincent emphasized the value of gratitude. One thing that he sees being discussed in Facebook is when suppliers are not fed properly during meal times in weddings done here in the Philippines. He contrasted it with the fact that overseas, the clients usually do not take care of that important detail during destination weddings. He shifted everyone’s perspective in saying that whatever is served to him during weddings, he is grateful for it because he is coming from the point of view of someone who has photographed several weddings abroad.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/W@WSuppliersPotluck6.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Ronald, who is the founder of Balay Kandila, gave a sobering reminder that even though you are at the top of your game and your company is riding on a wave of popularity, there will come a time that someone will overtake you. And so he reminded all suppliers to be focused on honesty and on focusing on the client and making sure you can deliver everything that you have promised.

Ms. Benz followed-up with the story that the W@W Awards trophy was fulfilled by Ronald and his team during the third year since its inception since they could not find the artist who made the design of the trophy. He confessed that his secret to his staying power in the industry is their passion. He said the reason why he and his team were able to survive for 19 years is because their passion for the work never waned. Year in and year out, he would still work as hard as they did during their first year and so far, it has benefited him immensely.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/W@WSuppliersPotluck7.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Joanne is a coordinator who focused on something important. She mentioned that if there will be more extra time for you, she encouraged everyone to savor that moment and use it as a moment of rest and introspection. Most suppliers have a frantic December since it’s considered peak season for the entire wedding industry. It would normally be the time when suppliers just focus on weddings day in and day out so being able to rest on off-days or days without bookings is important so they can recharge.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/W@WSuppliersPotluck8.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Dylan, who is managing The Mango Farm and is the founder of Vatel Manila, mentioned K by Cunanan and how she recently rebranded her catering business again in order to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of clients she continually has. Dylan recommended that it would be best to take a page out of Kaye’s book by continually improving what suppliers offer. He also said that what worked in the past may not be relevant today. He touched on a significant point which is, as suppliers, we shouldn’t necessarily look at each other’s work because there’s a tendency to copy. He encouraged people to look outside of the industry for inspiration such as traveling to different destinations.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/W@WSuppliersPotluck9.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]Tito Boy Kastner Santos mentioned that when it comes to airing out concerns regarding another supplier’s faults, he implored that perhaps doing it online isn’t the best approach simply because the dignity of the person is destroyed as the discussion invites people who are not even part of the issue. It was one of the few things that suppliers struggle with especially since Facebook has become an everyday part of everyone’s lives. He supported this analogy by saying that if you worked on your business with the perspective of a manager, you will not have a problem listening to clients. Most of the time, when an owner is presented a complaint or a concern, he or she does not have the time to listen to it. However, managers always listen because they are in charge of managing both employees and customers. He also touched on a very important point wherein he gave credit to God as the owner of their business and thus needs to listen to what He wants for us as business owners.

WaW Before I Do: Understanding Your Covenant

[cs_content][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]One of the common questions we get as counselors is this “If you catch your spouse with a 3rd party, is that enough reason to quit the marriage?” Or “What if you’re not happy with the marriage, what do you do?” Our general answer is “Stay and work it out!”. The only reason we can think of that can justify ending the relationship is when your life is in danger. Other than that, go back and work it out. One of our other common reply also is “Are you sure that you have totally exhausted all possible measures?” If they say yes then we give them things that usually couples have not tried. Have you ever tried working out in the gym and think you can’t do another rep, till your trainer or spotter says “Go! 3 more!” and you end up being able to do it. When you think you’ve exhausted everything, contact us and we’ll show you how you can do 3 more things to keep that relationship alive.

Husband & Wives, as they enter the marriage, should stick into their minds that there are “No escape buttons, no ejects and no quits in marriage”. It’s different when you enter the marriage with that mindset. Think of the workers who clean windows on high rise buildings, have you ever wondered how it could feel like being 50 floors up? the wind, the heat, the dirt? the dizziness? They do it not because they love the thrill of putting their life in danger but because there are no options. Marriage needs to be like this, no plan Bs.

I realize, why people give up so easily is that they never understood what they were getting into. The commitment was sub-standard to begin with. So I would like to dedicate this article to make you understand what makes a covenant so special:

  • A covenant is based on trust. A contract is based on distrust meaning to make sure the other party delivers what is supposed to be delivered. Usually, a contract involves the service that needs to be given and how much you need to pay. But not only that, it also usually says what is to be done as penalty for not being able to deliver. Check your lease agreement or the loan agreement that you signed with the bank. Because a contract is based on dis-trust. A covenant however is based on trust… true it is an agreement but it is entered into with the premise that the other party is going to do their part no matter what.
  • Subject – Why do you get married in the church and not just do a civil wedding? Because you want to get the pastor or the priest’s blessing and you think that with their blessing you are getting God’s blessing as well. Let me tell you this, if this were so, then the promise you are making is not only between yourselves nor is it with the person officiating your wedding but also to God. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 says “When you make a promise to God, don’t delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him. It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it.” However, being Civilly wed does not mean there is less commitment in your marriage. It is as binding and as recognized by God as a church wedding because the officiant was also instituted or instilled by God and is His authority.
  • Coverage – While some contracts have expiration dates, covenants do not. Even in case a law is passed that says marriages must be renewed every so and so years, in God’s eyes marriage is a lifetime which is why we say “in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer till death do us part” it means in any and all condition the marriage stays.
  • Effect – It involved 3 parties, you, your spouse and God. There are no other parties involved. So you two may agree that it is best to live separated, or divorced or annulled (whatever you want to call it) and the state may even agree with you but God will never agree to it and His laws are higher than the law of the land.

I’m sorry if this article is not what you expected… but we feel that many couples nowadays need to put in more commitment to the marriage. As a photographer, a usual complaint of couples after all the posing and picture taking is “Ang hirap pala ikasal” and I would joke by replying “I intentionally do that so that you will not think of doing it again”. A joke but a lot of truth… we should never think of doing it again and start living out our promise to stick it out “in richer or poorer, in sickness and in health till death do us part” and not just let it be a cliche that we were forced into saying in order to get the officiant’s signature on our marriage contracts. If you don’t mean it — perhaps you are not ready to wed.

Kaye Abad and Paul Jake Castillo’s Behind-The-Scenes and Official Wedding Pics – My Story

One of the sweetest ones I’ve witnessed.

The Cebu wedding though had a lot of guests (900 pax!) still felt intimate. The festivities started as early as the day before the wedding, when guests started coming in from manila and all over the world.

Dec 8, the night before the wedding we had an impromptu get together at the bridal suite of the bride, Kaye. It was a sweet moment seeing Kaye bond with her closest best friends and family during the last night as a single woman.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/PaulJakeandKayeWedding1.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=”” class=”aligncenter”][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]The day of the wedding, we were all busy and up and about by 8:30 am.
