Marry for love. Yes.
Marry for power and ambition. No.
Marry for love, power and and ambition. We don’t see why not.
The presidential elections doesn’t happen ’til May 11, 2010, but Senator Mar Roxas‘ upcoming wedding to broadcaster Korina Sanchez is creating quite a buzz among the Philippine electorate. Just because of their very public Wowowee wedding announcement(that’s a YouTube link not recommended for skeptics), some have already made up their minds if they’ll vote for him or not. And if the surveys are accurate, his “retirement from bachelorhood” seems to be doing him more good than harm. Either the senator is a true romantic or he knows what excites the poor voters. At the very least, we’re hoping it’s a combination of both. Their ‘fairytale’ is more believable that way.
Still, it amazes us that his impending wedding seems to be working to his advantage. And now there’s a full Inquirer article just about his pamanhikan. Thumbs up for promoting this time-honored pre-wedding ritual. But of course, sincerity of intentions if still foremost. We’ve yet to find out. 😉
Here’s an excerpt:

(via inquirer.net) Senator Manuel Roxas vowed to bring not just the elders of his Araneta-Roxas clan but also a “mambabalagtas” (traditional Tagalog orator) for a traditional “pamanhikan” scheduled for Sunday night at the Parañaque home of his fianceé, broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez.
A “pamanhikan” is a Filipino pre-wedding rite in which the man formally seeks the hand of his girlfriend in marriage before his future in-laws.
Roxas told Inquirer on Sunday that everything was set for the “pamanhikan.” As custom goes, the family of the groom makes the formal proposal of marriage. Once it is accepted, they sponsor a feast. [READ MORE…]

(via Manila Bulletin) Filipinos love a good romantic story. This is why it is not hard to imagine the whole archipelago heaving a collective sigh when young Sharon Cuneta exchanged “I do’s” with heartthrob Gabby Concepcion at the Manila Cathedral in the 80s, or when Christopher de Leon vowed to love Nora Aunor forever at a beachfront nuptial early in their careers.
And although these two marriages ended up in smoke, the public still aches for that perfect love story from and of their admired actors and actresses.
Manila Bulletin Online lists five celebrity couples who have not only proven that love conquers all, but have given the public some of the most unforgettable weddings of all time.
Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo
“Hindi ko naman ipinagdadamot kundi gusto ko lang ng payapa, maayos at eleganteng kasal. Ayoko ng magulo, ayoko ng ‘di komportable ang mga tao lalo na kami. Kasi for the past 22 years alam naman nila lahat sa akin. Akin na lang po muna ito,” implored Judy Ann Santos before her much talked about hush-hush wedding to Ryan Agoncillo.Judy Ann got her wish. On April 28, 2009, at 7 am at the San Juan Nepomuceno Church, San Juan, Batangas, the actress became Mrs. Ryan Agoncillo in solemn, elegant and media-free rites. It was no mean feat given that both Judy Ann and Ryan have a huge fan base.
Megastar Sharon Cuneta stood as their matron of honor. Agot Isidro, Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid added sparkle to the event by singing love songs to the couple.
Other than the said stars, the wedding was intentionally low-key yet at the same time, and as TV host Suzi Entrata-Abrera puts it, truly exceptional and very creative.
It was in 2004 when Judy Ann and Ryan’s love blossomed in the set of the ABS-CBN TV series, “Krystala.” Ryan proposed to Judy Ann on May 11, 2008, her 30th birthday.
Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago
Unlike the Agoncillo-Santos nuptial, celebrities Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto were very vocal and happy to share their wedding plans to the media.
Months before the wedding, the two even hosted a unique wedding entourage party at the classy Gazebo Royale along Visayas Avenue in Quezon City.
From then on, details of the wedding were an open book to the public: that the reception will be at the posh Tagaytay Highlands Country Club; top designer Randy Ortiz will suit up the groom, bride and the whole entourage; Gary Valenciano and Kuh Ledesma will sing a song specially composed for the wedding by known composer Trina Belamide; a shower of rose petals from a helicopter and fireworks will signal the end of the rites; and so on.
Asked to comment on a rumored P25 million expense, Raymart quipped: “Sobra naman ‘yon, tsismis lang ‘yon. We’ll spend P24.5 million lang!”
Claudine, then on top of her game as an actress, was asked on how she arrived at her decision to marry. “I’m not getting any younger dahil 26 na ako,” she said. “Also, Raymart is so mature and responsible I am sure he will be a good family man. I’ve never been more at peace in my life than when this fell into place.”
The two tied the knot on March 27, 2006; a date which coincides with the wedding anniversary of Raymart’s parents, the late director Pablo Santiago and wife Cielito.
Richard Gomez and Lucy Torres
Richard Gomez and Lucy Torres’ wedding was virtually celebrated by the whole city of Ormoc where Lucy hails.
Describing it as a big celebration might even be an understatement. A motorcade was held that brought the couple and their 1,000 guests to the Ormoc Super Dome. Printed shirts which read “I was there at the Richard-Lucy Wedding, Ormoc City, April 28, 1998” were sold for P25 on the streets.
The actor first met the mestiza model at a commercial shoot in 1993. He did not court her until 1997 though – and after yet another commercial shoot!
As it turned out, Lucy was a long-time fan of the handsome actor and so eventually, Richard married Lucy at the St.Peter and Paul Parish Church in Ormoc.
Did you know that two days after the wedding, another party was held at which CDs with songs close to Richard’s heart were given away to guests?
Aga Muhlach and Charlene Gonzalez
After being linked to many actresses, it was big news when actor Aga Muhlach announced his plans to marry beauty queen Charlene Gonzalez in 2001.
The two met at the set of the defunct ABS-CBN sitcom, “Oki Doki Doc” in 1993. From then on, they forged a good friendship that lasted through years of intrigues and individual successes, including Charlene winning the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe title in 1994.
On May 28, 2001, the friends became husband and wife, exchanging their “I do’s” at the St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Pacdal, Baguio City. The reception was held at Camp John Hay Club House with Le Souffle catering the sit-down dinner.
Baguio City then was turned into a festive place complete with colorful buntings to celebrate Aga and Charlene’s day. A three-day golf tournament at the Camp John Hay ushered in the wedding.
During the wedding, the groom, who looked dapper in a Giorgio Armani suit, was described as more nervous than the bride.
“Next to God, you are and always will be the most important person in my life. I commit myself in building our marriage, our home, and our happiness. I will forever be faithful and constant to you; with my love, I will give you my life and all that is meaningful to me,” Aga said in his wedding vow.
Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz
Despite a rocky marriage, husband and wife Cesar “Buboy” Montano and Sunshine Cruz could boast of having one of the most beautiful and lavish celebrity weddings of all time.
Set in an intricately designed open-air venue, and with the beautiful Manila sunset as backdrop, the well-admired actor and the sexy actress had vowed that their love was for keeps on September 14, 2000 at the beachside of Manila Bay. Cesar wore an Armani flown from Italy while Sunshine was in an Eric Pineda creation. The reception was held at Coconut Palace.
Buboy and Sunshine met at a film shoot of “Bullet,” the former’s directorial debut.
Years later, and after going through shared failures and problems including Cesar’s loss at a senatorial bid and Sunshine’s bitter word-war with Cesar’s sister, Sunshine was quoted to have said what sounded like concise paraphrase of her wedding vow: “I’ll do anything for Buboy.”
The following article was originally posted via facebook. Written by Trina Belamide, whose family owns the compound where the hush hush, private celebrity wedding reception of actress Judy Ann Santos to TV host Ryan Agoncillo took place. Plans about this union was kept under wraps and its truly commendable how such a high profile showbiz couple was able to do so. We’ve read a few articles of what transpired during that April 28 nuptials. But not much has been said about how this wedding was actually planned until now.
Coincidentally, it was also Trina who gave us a peek into another celebrity wedding back in 2006 when she agreed to answers our questions about the song she did for Claudine Barreto & Raymart Santiago’s wedding. Back then, she talked to us as an artist and a songwriter. For this article, she wears a different hat by candidly narrating her first-hand story about the wedding, from the time their resort was booked up until the brunch reception. Allow her to take us with her as she gives us a glimpse into another celebrity wedding. Read on…

The following excerpt came from the article which appeared in today’s edition of The Philippine Star. Written by Büm D. Tenorio Jr. (who also took the accompanying picture of the bride) witnessed the entire wedding festivities from sunup to sundown. Read his personal account…

The invite, which came in a rectangular native brown box read: “Eto na ‘to. Inuman na! Punta kang nakaputi. Sikreto lamang natin ‘to ah.” Most guests got their invites four days before the wedding via mail. The invite also came with the left pair of slipper. The other pair was claimed at the dinner reception. The slippers became the “official” footwear of the guests at the wedding dinner.
Juday’s and Ryan’s names were not mentioned in the invite. Many, however, were able to figure out whose wedding it was when they called the R.S.V.P. number of Rita Neri, the country’s premier wedding coordinator. Neri’s office confirmed it was indeed the wedding of Ryan and Juday and they never gave further information.
A sense of adventure was definitely an intrinsic ingredient of the wedding and only those who were truly close to the couple would understand the reason behind the thrill and suspense.
“Thank you for being part of this treasure hunt. You really have to be here,” Ryan told the more than 200 guests, referring to how everybody tried to keep the details of their wedding under wraps.
Earlier that day, there were only more than 80 of us who witnessed their 7 a.m. exchange of vows at the San Juan Nepomuceno church in the town of San Juan, three hours away from Balai Anilao by either boat or car.
“This is such a perfect moment. This is exactly how I envisioned it to be. Thank you,” Juday said, profusely punctuating her speech that night with gratitude. [READ MORE…]

So today turns out to be THE day of local celebrities Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillio. Theirs was one of the most anticipated weddings, but details were kept under wraps until the very last hour. Father Tito Caluag officiated the low-key ceremony held in San Juan Nepomuceno Parish Church in San Juan, Batangas, just this morning at 7 AM.
We’ve heard about the April 28 wedding date a couple of weeks ago. It was a definitely scoop but we can’t even blog about it. Not when the wedding suppliers were requested to abide to a non-disclosure agreement. Pinoyparazzi.com even reported that Willie Revillame received a text and read it aloud in this afternoon’s edition of “Wowowee” that the couple imposed a P5 million fine for the wedding’s suppliers if anyone squealed about the wedding date, location and other details. Whoa! 😯
While other news sites list the who’s who among the wedding entourage and guestlist, we at W@W will list the who’s who among the couple’s chosen suppliers:

(excerpted from mb.com.ph) The date was set last March 3, for the Albano-Meier nuptial. It was a Bohemian and purple motif church wedding at the Caleruega Church in Tagaytay. Reception was held at at Hacienda Isabella.
Others may not know, but Sarah Meier and Banjo Albano are already married. They had their civil wedding in New York three years back. “We’ve been together for five years, two and a half years before the civil wedding. I’ve been married for three years. We met each other in New York,” Sarah revealed.
“We feel we need to do the church wedding. After being together for three years, you want to go the next level of commitment and you know, iba naman talaga if you are blessed in the eyes of God. It’s been such a wonderful spiritual journey—getting to know my husband on a higher level. They explained what it really means to be man and wife. Not just being live-in partners or married by some judge. It’s a Catholic wedding. When you get to know the true meaning of what it’s like to be husband and wife, to be married in the biblical teachings, ang sarap talaga ng feeling,” Sarah enthused.
“This is what we think what we want to say to the world that this is really ‘til death do us part,’ wala na talaga. As in we don’t believe in divorce so I’m happy like this is where I’m supposed to be,” she added.
Sarah also told the Manila Bulletin that she and her husband already have a three-year-old daughter. And she’s absolutely the flower girl. Rajo Laurel is making our dresses,” Sarah said.
A few guests, only 200 people, are invited to their church wedding. They want it intimate and they decided to just throw another party in Manila after their wedding in Tagaytay.
“Cindy Kurleto is my maid of honor. She’s in Peru now and will be here before my wedding. I’m very excited,” Sarah happily said. [FULL ARTICLE]
(photo by Edwin Tuyay) Last February 12, Jay Contreras(frontman of the band Kamikaze) married Sarah Abad(sister of actress Kaye Abad) in a ceremony held at Paco Park. Their color motif? BLACK. The entourage and wedding guests were all wearing dresses and suits in that color yet the general tone didn’t look morbid at all. At best, it came out unconventional and fun simply looking at the pictures. Even the bride’s gown was accentuated by a black waistband which looked elegant. The groom’s long hair was even braided while the couple’s tattoos provided a refreshing contrast to the typical wedding photos.
Their chosen wedding ceremony venue was a bit controversial for a few as we read some comments in couple of personal blogs who have posted about this celebrity wedding. A few felt that having a ‘cemetery’ for a venue was a bit too weird or creepy for their taste. So we feel a little clarification is in order:
[source: wikipedia] “Paco Park was once Manila’s municipal cemetery during the Spanish colonial period. But burial or interment at the place already ceased in 1912. Descendants of those who were buried in the park had the remains of their ancestors transferred. A Roman Catholic chapel was built inside the walls of the Paco Park (Chapel of St. Pancratius). It has since become a very popular venue for weddings and receptions for couples who prefer a garden-like settings.”

[via China Daily] Finally after nine years of courtship and one year of registered marriage, Hong Kong TV celebrity Dickie Cheung and actress Zhang Qian had a formal wedding ceremony to mark the occasion held in the Philippines on January 12, 2009.
The local government has extended a warm welcome to the two, in particular to Zhang Qian, who was tourism ambassador to the Philippines last year. With assistance from the authorities, the ceremony was held in the 400-year-old San Agustin Church in Manila, and ended off with a large firework display, Cheung told the Ming Pao Weekly.
Popular TV hosts Dai Jun and Li Jing hosted the event; among the celebrity guests invited to the wedding ceremony were Andy Hui, Edmund Leung, Han Hong, Sammi Cheng and William Soo.
The couple has invited nearly 200 guests to this all-expenses-paid event, Cheung says.
Decked out in local traditional wedding dress, the two lovebirds had a pre-wedding photo shoot on Saturday (please see above) at the exclusive Club Punta Fuego in Batangas, a port city near Manila. Their outfits were provided by the Philippine Tourism Authority and were designed by a Filipino designer using pineapple fibers.
Dickie Cheung and Zhang Qian started dating in 1999 as co-stars on the TV serial “The Legend of Chen Mengji”. Zhang Qian was reported to be pregnant in mid-2007 but had a miscarriage in her eighth month of pregnancy in early 2008.
Zhang Qian wore a white wig during their wedding ceremony. She later told reporters that it was her idea to wear a white wig and have the white head decorations to symbolize the Chinese saying “white hair till old”. Having their ceremony held at the centuries-old San Agustin church is also symbolic because the structure has been through many natural disasters in the past, but still, it stands strong today. They hope that their marriage would be the same too — by being able to go through challenges but remain strong.

This relaxed 1992 wedding portrait sits on the Obamas’ living room mantel. [source: People]
Barack Obama, 47, inspired a lot of people all over the world when he was elected the 44th president of the United States of America and being the very first African-American to do so. Even his marriage is admired by the people who supported him.
He and his wife Michelle, 44, were married in October 3, 1992. In an interview, Michelle talked about her husband’s wedding vows: “Barack didn’t pledge riches, only a life that would be interesting. On that promise he’s delivered.”
One observation says the greatest benefits of the Obama presidency is hidden in plain sight: the relationship between Michelle and Barack. They provide a great role model of a healthy relationship, at a time when such models are sorely needed.
Here are some articles about the Obamas’ relationship/marriage:
Last Friday, reports came out that presidential daughter, Evangelina Lourdes “Luli” Arroyo, 37, will tie the knot with J. Aloysius ‘Luigi’ Bernas on January 9, 2009 in Bohol (inset: Luli & Luigi with designer Rhett Eala in the middle in this file photo courtesy of Inquirer).
(excerpt from Bohol Chronicle) Luli, who holds a masters degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, is the only unmarried child of the President.
Luigi, reportedly around ten years older than Luli, is a son of lawyer Antonio Bernas and a nephew of Ateneo Law School Dean and 1986 Constitutional Commission member Fr. Joaquin Bernas.
Asked to comment regarding the reports of her Bohol wedding, Luli told ABS-CBN News in an e-mail that she never talks about her personal life. “My personal life has never been open to media and that doesn’t change.”

At present, there are conflicting reports about the supposed presidential altar date.

Exactly a month ago, GMA News reporter Jiggy Manicad married Marnie Pulumbarit in a ceremony held at Christ the King in Greenmeadows. To know how the two started as a couple, read about their “Choc-Nut love affair.”
We know that the groom is used to delivering spiels for his reports being a news correspondent. But Jiggy’s marriage vow was short and unrehearsed in a rare mix of Tagalog and English. Yet his simple words made the message more heartfelt.
“Marnie, matagal na nating hinintay ang day na ito. And maaaring ‘di ko mabigay sa ‘yo ang sun or moon; but I assure you of my fidelity, commitment, love and prayers. Mahal na mahal kita.”
Their exchange of vows was captured by Bob Nicolas in the same-day edit he did for the wedding. Personally, my favorite part of the video was when the groom turned off the lights in one scene. Here’s a direct link to Jiggy & Marnie’s onsite video.

No, it wasn’t a prince who got married. If you’re a child of the 80s, you’d remember Joey — the character in a series of Royal Tru-Orange TV ads — played by RJ Ledesama, the brand’s most popular poster boy. We’ll, the boy’s all grown-up now and married lawyer and former Penshoppe model Vanessa Pastor early this month.
Aside from the subject and the accompanying image for this entry, I must admit that nothing else in this post is wedding-related. This is actually just a random thought about The Simpsons Movie as one of us is a BIG fan of the show.
Though there was a part in the movie when Homer was watching their wedding video, this is not the point of this post. The film is entertaining not in the big Hollywood blockbuster kinda way, but the creators clearly had fun making the movie with the intention to sometimes mess up with the audience. Don’t expect much, it’s the TV show on the big screen. If this weekend you’re already in Megamall visiting the Wedding Congress, why not hit the cinemas afterward to watch. It’s fun!
