Zandra Lim Launches Ready to Wed Designs

Zandra Lim Designs has just launched her Ready to Wed bridal collection. The launch was held on June 23, 2015 at Edsa Shangri-La Hotel.

Zandra has graciously shared some photos of her new line. We also asked her to share her thoughts about the new Ready to Wed by Zandra Lim Designs.

Where did you draw your inspiration in designing this collection?

I draw inspiration from everything. But mostly I think of my brides and how they would want to feel when they see the gowns. I imagine them trying it on and also imagine a pleasant gasp and a this-is-it-moment.

Do you have a personal favorite from the collection? If yes, why?

Yes, that would be gown #0623 from the Prestige Collection because if I were a bride, that design evokes my personality and the cut fits me perfectly.

What do you want your brides to feel or think when they wear your collection?

This is my RTW’s singular vision—to provide designs that provokes the spirit and imagination of a bride’s most awaited wedding day. That is the premise of the wedding gown fitting and purchasing. Come wedding day, I hope the gown choice will them feel elegant, resplendent, and grand…just I always dreamed it would be.

Marriage going out of fashion in Philippines?

no-wedding.gif
(via Agence France-Presse) Marriage is losing its luster for many in the Philippines, with an increasing number of couples starting families out of wedlock, the government census office said on Friday.

More than 37 percent of the 1.78 million babies born in Asia’s Roman Catholic outpost in 2008 had unmarried mothers, it said in a statement, citing results of the latest population census.

This was 12.5 percent higher than the previous year, and compared with a 2.0 percent increase for all births, the census office said.

A growing number of Filipinos now treat marriage as an option, rather than a requirement, for starting families, said Nene Baligad, a member of a unit of the National Statistics Office that licenses people who officiate weddings.

“Nowadays, some couples just live in and only get married after having four or five children,” she told AFP.

“You can’t really say it’s for practical reasons, since you can be married on the cheap. It’s more like, we Filipinos tend to follow what is in fashion.”

Eight out of 10 Filipinos are Catholic, and the Philippines is one of only three territories in the world, along with Malta and the Vatican, where divorce remains illegal.

However the census showed that many couples were defying the nation’s powerful Catholic bishops by not only on having babies out of wedlock, but also by shunning church weddings.

Marriages either solemnized by the church or by government officials fell 0.7 percent to 486,514 in 2008, according to the census.

Just over a third of couples were married in Catholic ceremonies, while four in 10 chose civil rites officiated by a person licensed by the census office.

Manila couple Alvin Ruiz, 24, and his girlfriend, Joann Lopez, told AFP as they visited the Manila Zoo that they started living in together four years ago and now had a three-year-old son.

“Instead of spending for a wedding, we used the money to buy infant milk,” said Ruiz, who earns a living by buying used cooking oil from restaurants then selling them to companies that turn them into fuel for motor vehicles. [source]

A wedding for the books!

We almost missed posting about this real-life wedding. Their story was emailed to us by Jasmine Mendiola who was the make-up artist in the said wedding.  The excerpt below is from an article of the same title:

couple-rockysarah.jpg

(via Phil. Star) As Rocky (Ramon Miguel B. Abaño) and Sarah (Sarah Amelyn G. Bautista) exchanged “I dos” last January 22, they not only shared their vows in front of families and friends, they shared their thoughts and words on love and life with their first co-authored book, Under the January Moon (published by Central Books Publishing). The book, given as a wedding souvenir to their guests, is a collection of prose and poetry written by them throughout the years. [READ MORE….]

from the bride: Our wedding was a Prose & Poetry-themed wedding cum book launch cum fundraising project. My husband and I launched our first co-authored book entitled “Under the January Moon.” We gave the books to our guests as souvenirs. At the same time, the guests were encouraged to buy a book for a friend and the whole amount goes to two institutions here in our country that focus on the development of children in depressed communities: one is SAGIP (Sagipin ang Galing, Isip at Pangrap), a child & youth development program of Gawad Kalinga (means “to give care”); and the other one is Santa Maria Eufrasia Daycare Center, a school in the mountains of Sariaya, Quezon, practicing the Waldorf teaching method. Donations were made under the name of the donor guest. This advocacy angle of our wedding was our way of doing our share in making the world a little bit brighter for children. It’s our lifetime commitment to love not just each other but those who are in need.

 Bravo Rocky & Sarah! 🙂

Pope Benedict to Filipino bishops: Strengthen matrimony

pope_benedict_xvi.jpg(via CBCPnews.com) Pope Benedict XVI called on the Filipino bishops to strengthen the sacrament of matrimony especially among the young couples today.

As the Filipino culture is confronted with “secularism,” he said care must be given to showing young people the importance of the sacraments “as instrument of God’s grace and assistance.”

“This is particularly true of the sacrament of matrimony, which sanctifies married life from its beginning, so that God’s presence may sustain young couples in their struggles,” Benedict XVI said.

The pontiff made the statement during the “ad limina” visit of Bicol and Visayas bishops in Rome on February 18. It also came amid the declining Catholic marriages in the country.

An official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines earlier said that the number of church marriages dropped from 177,940 in 2008-2009 to just 166, 000 in 2010.

Fr. Melvin Castro, executive secretary of the CBCP’s Commission on Family and Life, said this was because Filipinos were marrying at a later age.

He said couples were also opting for civil marriages first before going for a “grand” church wedding.

Another church official of the CBCP’s National Appellate Matrimonial Tribunal also admitted before that the high cost of church weddings is deterring couples from getting married.

According to retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz, churches must encourage couples to have simple wedding rites instead or offer the sacrament for free.  For his part, retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz of the CBCP’s National Appellate Matrimonial Tribunal also admitted the high costs involved in holding church weddings is deterring couples from getting married.

Cruz said churches must encourage couples to have simple wedding rites instead or offer the sacrament for free.

Timeline: Puey Quiñones Fashion Fiasco

The name of fashion designer Puey Quiñones was trending in twitter a couple of days ago, and sadly, it wasn’t in a good or flattering way.

The story involves soon-to-weds, Jhon Maala and Shea Gamboa who got Puey’s services for a custom-made suit for the groom.  Jhon reportedly tried several times to meet the designer during his fittings but the designer was a no-show.   When the suit was finally delivered, the couple discovered it wasn’t exactly what they ordered.  What’s worse, the “custom-made” suit has another brand’s care label tucked in its inside pocket.

Below is how the story snowballed in the social media.

fashionfiasco2011.jpg

Feb 14, 2011

  •  the bride Shea Gamboa posted: “Makukulong ka sa ginagawa mo… Ibalik mo pera namin! Isa kang mangugulang!”

Feb. 15, 2011

  • Katherine de Castro (host of ABS-CBN/Bayan Prod.’s “Trip na Trip”) tweeted this w/ link to above pic: “The designer asked 30k for this suit. Pero bakit may Dansen tag? Sa SM ito di ba? Napeke kaya yung friend ko?”
  • Michael Lim (wedding/event host) posted an album on his FB account with the title “Fashion Advocacy” which included the side-by-side picture of the suit in question and an original ready-to-wear Dansen suit.  The news spread like wildfire among fashion and wedding industry insiders.

  • Concerned about the implication of the story to their brand, BOBON issued this official statement via their FB page:

In response to the Facebook post “Fashion Scam” showing a photo of a suit with a label “Bobon by Puey Quinones” alongside the label of another local clothing company, as well as related Twitter messages, we wish to clarify that BOBON is not in any way involved in the design, production or sale of the suit in the photo, or the affixing of the “BOBON by Puey Quinones” label to the suit.

BOBON, owned and operated by Urban Lifestyles, Inc., started as a collaboration with a single designer in 2008 and has since grown into a collective effort involving several Filipino designers. BOBON is not affiliated with any one designer. Although the label “Bobon by Puey Quinones” was initially used in 2008, this label was discontinued more than a year ago. Since 2010, all BOBON pieces simply bear the label “BOBON”.

We have no knowledge of how the label “Bobon by Puey Quinones” ended up in the suit in the Facebook post as we have used every effort to reclaim and destroy these old labels. We are certain that this suit was not purchased by the owner from or through BOBON. All BOBON pieces are sold exclusively at or through the BOBON store at The Podium and we have no record of this transaction.

We wish to assure our loyal clients and friends that all BOBON pieces are original custom designs by our designer partners. We are committed to maintaining high quality and originality in our creations and remain steadfast in our support of Filipino designers.
To our clients, partners and friends, we thank you for your continued support and belief in us.

  • with the growing comments in Mike Lim’s post including reports of similar cases, he decided to document these unscrupulous practices in a blog he called “Pinoy Fashion Pulis” (www.pinoyfashionpulis.com)

Feb. 18, 2011

Regarding the recent “fashion scam”, I regret that all this happened. First and foremost, I would like to apologize to the couple for all the trouble that it has caused them.

I was simply pressured to create a suit and found a perfect blank canvas to develop.  I know the entire situation could have been handled better but now it has just been blown out of proportion and affected so many others.
I assure all concerned that I am doing the best that I can to fix this situation.  I have been in contact with the party involved and intend to settle this peacefully.

To the couple who brought attention to this matter and to everyone else that have raised concerns over the quality of my service as a designer... I am sorry.

I am doing all that I can to make sure that this does not happen again.
Thank you for your understanding and for your concern.
