WaWie Feature: Nyeng + Tin DIY prenup

Congratulations! Your boyfriend proposed to you and now you are planning to tie down the knot in the next couple of months or so. As you go through the nitty gritty details of wedding planning, you might have contemplated on whether or not you are going to have an engagement photo shoot or what is commonly known as Prenup Photo Shoot. With all the planning and wedding expenses you are torn between having a prenup shoot or not.

Tin Castro, now Manalo and Nyeng her husband had their do-it-yourself or DIY creative prenup shoot, YES! You read it right, DIY! Weddings at Work (WaW) and Pinterest has been a great help in making their DIY engagement shot possible. “Search ka lang ng “engagement shoot” madami ng lilitaw”, Tin wrote. She took inspiration from real life pre nup shoots and choose an executable theme. According to her, it is important to know your capabilities and ensure that whatever peg or style you will be choosing as your theme can be pulled off easily. “I took time looking for a balloon supplier kung saan ba pinaka mura, anong game plan sa pag pump, ano pandidikit sa balloons, ano mga kailangan dalhin, anong back up in case hindi maging successful ang execution”. To cut down on cost, Tin had decided against getting a stylist. She spent a lot of time conceptualizing and picturing the end result in her mind.

On the day of their engagement shoot, she had help from her friends to set everything up. They styled the venue the night before the shoot, they pumped each and every balloon then suspended them from the ceiling just as how she plans it to look. They worked on the space for almost 2 hours.

Tin and Nyeng got the expertise of Camille from CamZar Photography to do their prenup and wedding photo coverage. The group was one of their WaW find, they have read reviews of the team from the group and decided to hire them to cover their first of many milestones as husband and wife. It was a risk they took as they were not able to meet Camille or anybody from CamZar Photography in person prior to booking. How Camille’s team delivered through the photo shoot did not disappoint, the couple felt comfortable working them. “What really amazed me (from the team) was the different angles they were able to capture (us) sa napaka liit na “studio” namin! We were shooting (t)here for almost an hour dahil andami nilang ideas”, Tin mussed.

Indeed their DIY pre nup shoot was a success! Their photographer was able to capture the couple in a beautiful light moment. Their photos exclude simplicity and a fresh classic vibe. A do-it-yourself pre nup is possible, all you need is an inspiration, determination and a good team to back you up.

Harry Potter DIY Wedding

However, the Potterhead in me wouldn’t shut up so six months before the wedding, I told my then fiancé that I can make a “Harry Potter” theme work. So we kept the colors which is “luckily” the colors of Ravenclaw which has been my Hogwarts house forever.

We wanted to stay on budget so I opted to do the Harry Potter elements wedding by myself. I love DIYs and I felt that I can do this.

The invitations were designed by my good friend Arni Santiago and I was the one to print, cut and glue the pieces together. After a few days and a couple of glues emptied, our Marauder’s map invitations were done!  For the envelopes, I always wanted them wax sealed so we bought a wax seal kit from Lazada.[/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/2″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/HarryPotterDIY1.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/2″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/HarryPotterDIY3.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ class=”cs-ta-center center-text” style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/HarryPotterDIY2.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]I always wanted a unique ring holder and my then fiancé told me I could make a golden snitch and I am so glad I did![/cs_text][/cs_column][/cs_row][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/2″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/HarryPotterDIY4.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/2″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://weddingsatwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/HarryPotterDIY5.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]And what better way to guide our guests to their seats than a bottle of Felix Felicis? We thought it’s about time we share some of them here on the blog.

We surveyed some of the WaWies and asked them to share their prenup locations and photos. We received a LOT of entries, from local prenup locations to those abroad. For now, let us share with you those who had their prenup shoots in venues within Metro Manila.

WaW Undercover: Life of a Wedding Coordinator

Backtrack – Whenever we get together and they share wedding behind-the-scene stories, I would always jest that I wanna join and see what goes on. Since I could easily be a nuisance, Thoffy picked a wedding where I know most of the suppliers involved. This way, he can throw me to any of them when his team gets busy.

After a few tries, we finally got a date when I was free and the location was convenient.

Yes, we asked permission from the couple, but I was just lucky they said yes as I am pretty sure they had no idea what they are agreeing to.

The day came and I wanted to do a real time update for the feel. I wasnt able to really plan it and just called it #wawundercover which I know is not really an apt name.

Maybe you can suggest a better name?

Let me share with you how it was for me via a photoblog. Thoffy’s Coord Team arrives at prep 8 hours before the wedding. Make-up team was there and starting already. So much earlier pa sila. The wedding was with Muriel Vega Perez.

*Note: 8 hours is not the standard, may coord na comfy at 6 hours, may iba na 5 hours. It is not the number hours but the comfort zone of each team; being early but inefficient is useless.

Most of the time its meant for sustenance than as an enjoyable treat.

Coord struggle to bring in food, no joke yan. Couples want to feed suppliers well but any amount x the number of people needed to be fed is no joke din.

Suppliers finding a place to eat is also no joke if room is small, lucky if they find a table like in this case; sometimes it is balanced on the lap, sometimes it is awkwardly done with family members around, sometimes it is even done in hotel’s parking lot or in the car on the way to church! But that is if may food.

If food is not provided, that is altogether a bigger problem.

Jericho and Christine

Jericho and Christine were married last Nov. 22, 2014.

Motif and Theme

We chose aqua because we are both divers so we wanted something close to the ocean. We also wanted our wedding to be timeless and elegant.

What were your fears prior to the wedding? How did you deal with it?

I was really worried about the attendance of the guests. A week prior to the wedding and there are still a lot who have not confirmed their attendance or those who gave very vague answers as to whether they are coming or not.

In the end, we just made a safe estimate for the caterer and stylist on how many attendees are confirmed plus a buffer table for contingency. Good thing we trusted the advise of our wedding planner.

Church: Notre Dame de Vie Chapel- Fernbrook Gardens

WaW Weddings Jericho and Christine1

We booked the venue one week after our engagement. I have nothing but good words to say about Fernbrook and how our account executive, Kaira, handled our account. Sobrang dali kausap. We brought our own priest, too (my husband’s high school classmate) and had no problems with the chapel.

Wedding Planner/ Coordinator: The 3rd Party Wedding Planners

2014-12-19 10.13.42

With more than 15 years in the wedding industry, these guys really know what they are doing. I’ve seen coordinators who are “sabog” during the wedding day but these guys really set the bar for being professionals. After the wedding I had at least three guests who asked who our coordinators were because bilib daw sila sa kinuha namin.

We got the full coordination package and I could say that it was really worth it. They helped us in choosing the best suppliers but at the same time they never insisted on anything we didn’t like. I really appreciated their honest advice and feedback and they do not take commissions from suppliers that we booked. Malaking tulong din sila in getting discounts kasi they are well-known in the industry.

One month before the wedding, they have already finalized everything with our other suppliers and even made avery  detailed three-day schedule for us before, during, and after the wedding day. During the wedding, I was totally relaxed because I knew that these guys would be taking charge of everything.
One of the best advice that we took from previously married friends is to invest in a good wedding planner. I’m really glad that we had the them to help us every step of the way. Yes, these guys are not cheap but they are totally worth it!

Wedding Gown: Edwin Tan

2014-12-03 12.29.23

2014-12-19 10.15.20

At first I was really hesitant to have my gown made by Edwin because I know that he is a celebrity designer. We first went to Adorata Weddings, their RTW shop where all their lovely gowns are reasonably priced. Akala ko he’s masungit but nooo, he’s one of the nicest and most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met.

After trying on three gowns, I still didn’t get the “this is it!” feeling so he looked at my pegs and started to sketch a gown for me. Grabe, ang galing! First sketch pa lang, nakuha na nya agad. I really felt that I was looking at my dream gown right then and there. Our next meetings and fittings were held at their shop na in Wilson since I’m having a custom-made gown instead.

A month before the wedding I wanted to change something in the neckline of the gown and pumayag naman siya. In the photos, you’ll see that the gown looks quite heavy pero magaan lang talaga siya. I also liked the shimmery layer he used that gave off just the right amount of sparkle when hit by light.

Madali kausap. Perfect fit yung barongs (pants, too) and they delivered ahead of time. Highly recommended!

Entourage Gowns: Krystal Gail Gowns

2014-11-22 21.05.28
Located in Pacita Complex, San Pedro, Laguna. Madali kausap yung owner, Ms. Regine, but you have to provide printouts of the design na ipapagaya mo and you also have to provide the fabric. Their beading and quality of work is excellent and that is why we chose them for our entourage. Hindi rin sila tipid sa beads and embellishments so good deal na.

Although we didn’t avail of their styling, they still exceeded our expectations because of the extras they provided and because of their great service. They even provided a wishing tree with personalized note cards since I found out at the last minute na wala pala kaming guest book. The name cards, menu cards, table numbers, cake and everything else were elegantly done, too.

We wanted a photographer who does a lot of creative shots and Blacktie did not disappoint. Their photos are artistically done and taken from all the right angles.

Secondary Photo: Jiggie Alejandrino

2014-11-24 03.20.43

One of the best out there! We definitely made the right decision in getting Jiggie as backup. His team was one of the first to arrive at the hotel and even before the wedding, we always look forward to our meetings since they’re such a fun couple (he works with his wife). His photos are dramatic and well-composed, yet nothing looks staged. Ang galing talaga! He specializes in portraits and in using natural light.

Video: Ian Cruz Films

https://vimeo.com/104407013

One of our favorite suppliers! When Ian found out that husband and I are both avid scuba divers, he immediately suggested that we do a unique Save-the-Date video, and even offered a special rate for it.

After doing our save the date, nagpa-certify din siya with his wife and they are now licensed divers ready to do more underwater videos. We have nothing but praises for him and his team. Sobrang bait, very humble!

During the wedding day, una sila dumating sa hotel and they immediately began filming. Since we’ve worked with them na on our save the date (we filmed it twice, on different locations) we were really at ease with them na. Yung SDE namin, we had no idea that it would turn out like that kasi he never instructed or directed us to do anything. Natural lang lahat. Kaya ang galing talaga how he put everything together.

https://vimeo.com/112628606

I tell you, Ian Cruz works magic!

Bridal HMUA: Toto Bagamasbad

Jericho and Christine-1397

My gown designer was actually the one who highly recommended Toto for my hair and makeup. I was initially surprised that this guy is so hard to book! And now I know why: he’s really good. His team is composed of four jolly and nakakaaliw guys and they work wonders really fast.

Entourage and Prenup HMUA: Toni Aviles

2014-11-12 11.21.10

My first choice as HMUA. I booked Toni one week after getting engaged even if we didn’t even have a set wedding date nor venue yet. She already did my makeup on three previous occasions and I really love her. I’ve also recommended her to fellow brides and they have nothing but praises for Toni. She has her own way of making you feel like a “Tonified” diyosa. Now if you follow her on Instagram, you’ll see just how good she is. Amazing talaga.

Prenup Stylist: Yvonne Camay

2014-11-12 11.23.38

Since we already knew that we would fail miserably if we choose our own outfits for our prenup session, we decided to hire a stylist. Sa lahat ng pinagtanungan ko, Yvonne is one, who stood out kasi magaan agad loob ko sa kanya. Plus, her rates are ultra reasonable! She did not disappoint, too. Todo-asikaso kami on the pictorial day and her pegs really matched the place. Nothing tacky or ikakahiya namin a few years from now. I highly recommend getting a stylist for your prenup session lalo na pag you guys don’t have enough time (and creativity) on your hands. You won’t go wrong with Teacher Yvonne.

Florist (Ceremony): Scenta Flora

Jericho and Christine-2130

Easy to deal with. Nasunod yung mga bilin namin.

Bouquet Florist & Reception Stylist: Flowers Unlimited

Jericho and Christine-2935

2014-11-22 13.38.50
Rolan did a marvelous job with the reception! He transformed it into a dream and even the guests were raving about how lovely and elegant the place was. They even had to check if the flowers were indeed real because they’re so pretty. Hindi matipid sa flowers si florist. No fillers, flowers talaga nilagay nila. Nasunod yung gusto ko na hydrangeas for the tables and bilin ko to keep things neat and elegant.

As for the bouquets, they used high-quality flowers. I had peonies as my bouquet, as suggested by Edwin Tan.

Wedding Preps Venue: The Bellevue Manila

Jericho and Christine-2948
Music (Ceremony & Reception): Anima Choir and Strings

Highly recommended! Ang galing nila. People cried because of their version of “A Thousand Years.” We also wanted to give a standing ovation when they sang “The Prayer” habang nasa church.

Gifts for Principal Sponsors: The Daily Green Store

2014-10-21 08.55.32

So easy to deal with! Ang bilis pa ng production and very professional kausap. We had customized jewelry and watch boxes in our motif and monogram for our principal sponsors.

Gifts for Famale Entourage: Personalized Bracelets by Crissa Catalan

2014-11-23 09.05.59

She used freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals and sterling silver for the bracelets. Nakalagay din yung initials ng abay in each bracelet. It came in a box with our motif and monogram too.

The Story of the Php100,000 WaW Wedding

“A Php100,000 wedding? Ang saya siguro kung sama-sama tayo sa isang wedding!”

Over breakfast while at Abe’s Farm in Pampanga, these suppliers were chatting when an idea came to them. What if they work together in one wedding? Imagine 15 of the brightest wedding suppliers working taking care of one wedding. How lucky must the bride feel to have these amazing suppliers work on her big day!

This simple idea started the ball rolling. It was an idea of a fun project to give one lucky bride to have her dream wedding for just Php100,000. This was a #wawlovinlimangfamilia history.

After all the laughter and stories, we were positive we would definitely have fun working together. It would be efficient, too, since we all knew each other already. So we pooled common dates, thought of what we can contribute, and finalized a rate that’s a mere fraction of our fees combined.

The Mechanics

LovinLimangFamiliaPromo

WaW LovinlimangFamilia14

The mechanics were pretty simple. We wanted a WaWie to become the recipient of this promo because we also wanted to give back to WaW for being such a blessing to all of us. It so happened that it was the 15th year of WaW, thus, the choice of our promo name.

Couples sent in entries, we read through them, and eventually we voted on a winner.

The Wedding Day

March 27, 2015 was a highly anticipated date. Everyone was excited to see everyone. Yes, their preps venue Crosswinds and ceremony/reception venue Angelfields radiated a sense of anticipation and lots of energy from suppliers, who wanted to do well.

Tippy Dee and team waved their wands, err… their brushes and curling irons. Events by Thoffy and Kiss the Girl Events worked together as though they had been coordinating together for some time.

Boy Kastner Santos arrived with the most awaited bridal gown and groom’s suit. These were complemented by the bouquet and boutonnière of Serge Igonia, who also provided the floral needs of the entourage and the ceremony
aisle.

WaW LovinlimangFamilia8

Alex Ruelo of ImagineNation as lead photographer, Mezarc Buslon and team as auxiliary photographers, and Aisle 1401 as videographers got busy right away documenting everything in sight, including the two-tone unity coins from WeddingsatWork.

More details at the ceremony stage and reception registration area came as a result of the working hands of Moki Gray Designs. Wires for lights and sounds were meticulously laid out by Rejectkrew Professional Lights & Sounds by Elmer Bautista as toy cakes and pastries arrived with the couple’s thematic cake.

WaW LovinlimangFamilia9

WaW LovinlimangFamilia10

Before the ceremony ended, Perfect 10 Weddings by Darlene Tan-Salazar arrived. That signaled the completion of Kerby and Arra’s Lovin’ Limang Familia.

The Lovin’ Limang Familia proved to be a fun moment for the suppliers. It was a fitting celebration for WeddingsatWork’s 15th anniversary. Should we do this again? 🙂

Harold and Len

Groom Harol and bride Len were wed in March 7, 2015.

Len is one of the active members of WeddingsatWork YahooGroups. In this month’s WaW Weddings, we are featuring their wedding. Take a look at how to prepared for their big day.

Motif and Theme

I have always wanted a day garden reception. It seems more relaxed and more cheerful. I wanted it bright and sun so what better color to pick than yellow?

What were your fears prior to the wedding? How did you deal with it?

They say that sometimes brides-to-be will have nightmares about their wedding day. And yes, it did happen to me. I was afraid of not being able to book all the needed suppliers on time. I was afraid of rain, and that some of the suppliers won’t deliver what was agreed upon.

Photo: Jeff and Lisa Photography
They were the first ones I booked since I like their clean and non-pretentious shots. I booked them first right after I got engaged since I just fell in love with their shots at my friends wedding.

WaW Weddings Harol and Len1

WaW Weddings Harol and Len2Video: Joaquin Ambata
It was my coordinator that suggested him. She said that what’s unique about him is he really makes an effort to make each of his videos unique, depending on the couples personality. Look through his work and you will see how unique each video is. This is the link to our SDE.

Bridal and entourage gown Ryan Madamba
I loooove my gown! He became my friend and I loooove how he stayed beside me during the wedding and how he prayed with me before the church door opened. He is real nice and talented. We both love Ellie Saab, so if that’s your style, simple and elegant do check him out. His instagram is @byryanmadamba

WaW Weddings Harol and Len3

WaW Weddings Harol and Len4Coat: Gardini
Easy transaction, looks good and very affordable. I highly recommend them. They also rent suits so should your entourage need one you can recommend them.

WaW Weddings Harol and Len5Make up artist Chi Chi Sotomil
Perfect!!!! I did a lot of trial make-ups with various make-up artists. I am very particular with make-up. She is just perfect. She did both my pre-nup and wedding day make-up. I will return to her for special events.

WaW Weddings Harol and Len6Entourage Mua: Joy Ramirez
His team is the one in charge of all my grad pics since med school. Very affordable at 800 per head within Manila and 1000 if out of town (Rates apply as of Len’s wedding). Everyone looked pretty. They also arrived very early and can d0 make-ups very fast with high quality.

WaW Weddings Harol and Len24Coordinator: Joed See Events
Joed is my grade school friend so I booked her right away. Without bias, I can say her team is amazing. I had no problems during the wedding day and the days before that. Highly recommended.

Flowers Sweetstems
I got to know her through WaW and I liked her posts at Facebook. I loved my bridal bouquet and so did the
photographers.

WaW Weddings Harol and Len8Host: Darlene Tan Salazar
Stress-free. The guests all raved about how good she is. And it’s like having a second coordinator. I really don’t need to explain how good she is. Everyone knows about her here at WaW.

Invites: Global Invitations
Pros: cheap and really good-looking. Everyone can’t stop raving about our passport invite. Everyone loved it. They’re a bit to transact with, though, so you have to be super duper kulit like me.

WaW Weddings Harol and Len9Cake: Joy San Gabriel
Her cake just tastes soooooo good and her style is very elegant. They are also so sweet as they gave us wedding presents. Joy San Gabriel can be more expensive compared to other cake suppliers but if taste is important to you, you will love her. Amaretto is such a winner!

WaW Weddings Harol and Len10Caterer: k by Cunanan
They were my non-negotiable. Everyone can’t stop talking about how good the food is. I also love their styling ever since. It was a bit hard to transact with them and the response time was long. Communication, however,  improved weeks before my wedding so it was worth it.

WaW Weddings Harol and Len23

Preps: Villa Ibarra
I booked them since the hotel has a good view and only has eight rooms. It was easy to reserve all the rooms, which we did. So, the night before it was only family in the whole hotel.

Very good and very affordable. Easy to transact with them. No regrets at all.

Souvenir from divi personalized shot glasses from Tabora. Really good-looking at 20 per piece with packaging na.

How did the WeddingsAtWork community help you during wedding preps?

A lot. Not only did WaW help me scout for suppliers but more importantly, I was able to meet a lot of good friends. These are brides who shared the same anxiety with me about preparing for a wedding. And it’s only fellow brides to be that will understand how stressful it is to prepare for one.

What are the advantages/perks of being a WaWie?

Amazing new friends. Learning about supplier feedback is a bonus.

Message or tips to WaW community?
I think that it’s better to meet the people in person. So if you have time to attend at least one of the community’s events, do so. Meeting Mimma is always a pleasure. Looking at how she has started this community is amazing. Weddings are one of the happiest yet sometimes stressful events in ones life and what better way to prepare for it than to meet new friends and have tons of fun and girl chikahan along the way.

Through Our Fathers’ Eyes

While the wedding day is probably the most exciting moment in a bride’s or a groom’s life, we probably can’t say the same thing for a dad. The day can be filled with mixed emotions. Excitement because there’s a new member of the family. Overwhelming love because all the people that he loves is gathered in one joyous occasion. At the same time, there’s probably a teeny bitty of dread because it feels like losing someone.

In some cases, the dad may be either sick or has passed on. But even this may be the situation, couples still find a way to make them part of this beautiful milestone. Our love for our dads run deep. And today, Father’s Day, we show you how much dads love our brides and grooms. Bring out the tissues, everyone.

Wedding Gown Inspirations from Real Brides

We often see wedding gowns from our favorite designers. More often than not, these are worn by gorgeous models. The reality is we are not models and we can’t help but wonder how wedding gowns would look good on us. So, we asked brides of all shapes and sizes to show us how good they looked in these gowns.

50 Golden Years for the Golden Couple

I wrote this piece before the untimely death of my father on May 26, 2015. It’s unfortunate he did not get the chance to read this. This is a tribute to his marriage to my mom. -Abet

Wedding anniversaries are not a celebration of perfect marriages. We all know there is no such thing. Rather, it’s a celebration of imperfect couples choosing to stay together despite the problems and imperfections.

My parents, Boy and Perla Rana, should have been celebrating their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary exactly today. But it was not meant to be. The date was June 7, 1965 when they exchanged I dos. But I guess it wasn’t a wedding the kind of wedding my parents had envisioned.

Lumban Express
My hometown in Lumban, Laguna played an pivotal rode in the marriage of my folks. It was the mid-1960s, way before I was even conceived, when my dad accompanied my mom to his hometown as she stood as ninang in the baptism of the eldest child (Ate Cecil) of my dad’s older brother (Tito Celso). Mom had to spend the night in Lumban before they head back to Aurora province where my mom’s parents stay. My mom then was staying in a dorm in Manila with her brother (Tito Ben). When she didn’t come home that night, my Tito immediately sent a telegram to my Lolo (Sixto Capiral) saying my mom eloped (tanan) with my dad. When Lolo got word that his eldest daughter spent the night with her boyfriend (never mind the fact that my mom’s younger sister, Tita Bebot, was with them the whole time), he commanded that my dad marry my mom.

Yes, just like in the old black & white Tagalog movies. You can say it’s pikot (shotgun wedding) only if my dad didn’t like to marry my mom. But he did. Maybe not exactly in that scenario, but she’s the one he wanted to marry. Sadly, I don’t remember seeing any of my parent’s wedding pictures growing up. I don’t think there was any since it was an “unexpected” wedding. What I remember seeing is a group shot of the couple with their friends in Lumban celebrating their union.

lumban

Hawaii Four-O
So growing up, I hear my mom saying she want to celebrate their 25th Silver Wedding so she can finally wear a wedding gown and walk down the aisle. But it wasn’t meant to be. 1990 was a time when their relationship wasn’t exactly rosy. My mom went to the States while my dad stayed in Manila but he was not living with us.
But their physical separation wasn’t for long, they got back together. It was also the time when their kids have graduated from college and started to get married to start their own family. Then grand kids came along.
We knew my mom still wants to get to experience a wedding as she said she wants her grandkids to be the bearers and flower girls. But 50 years seem like a long wait.

So in 2005, during their 40th ruby wedding anniversary, we booked The Coconut Palace and the mini-chapel within the complex to finally hold the wedding that my mom has been looking forward to have. We all pitched in to contribute. With my eldest brother Fol standing as the official photographer and our supplier friends in W@W helping create the outdoor luau party we envisioned, my parents finally got to invite their family and friends to their own wedding. It was finally a fulfillment of my mom’s dream wedding.

Sunshine Cruise
Another 10 years came by and talks about their golden wedding anniversary came up. Everyone unanimously agreed that we hold it in a cruise this time and make it a strictly family affair. But June was out of the question since the kids got classes. So we looked for a date where everyone was free and that was the weekend of Holy Week.
Weeks before, the grown-ups agreed to pool our money and pledged to shed off some pounds with the pot going to the Biggest Loser. It’s part of the motivation to lose some weight so they can dress up for the wedding.

From Manila, the entire family took a flight to Hong Kong. At HKIA, we met my with sister, her family from Australia, and my OFW/expat nephew from Korea before we went on board the cruise.

It was more of a vacation really than a wedding. The upper deck of the ship was closed exclusively for our family one afternoon while we were docked in Taiwan for the golden ceremony. The captain of the ship was there to officiate the ceremony. And the rest of the afternoon was spent taking pictures.

Since we didn’t have any wedding supplier with us and Kuya Fol wasn’t with us anymore, the rest of the family took turns to be the photographer, thanks also to the trusty tripod. The shoot lasted longer than the ceremony itself. Hehe!

Cheers to the re-newlyweds!

Toto and Nicolai

We had a chat with recent bride, Nicolai, about her ranch-themed wedding, to her now husband, Toto Villaruel, held last March 18. She is not a W@Wie but she belongs to the W@W Universe.

Nicolai Melicor Wedding Photography, herself a wedding supplier, is used to the hustle and bustle involved in a wedding preparation. We were curious about what it was like for her being the bride this time.

WaW Toto and Nicolai9

The wedding was held at El Kabayo, Subic, a western-inspired venue in Pampanga. The wide open spaces of the ranch, surrounded by trees and white picket fences, was the perfect backdrop for Nicolai and Toto’s dream wedding.

The entire wedding setup –from the dressing of the tree, to the six long tables that accommodated 50 people for each, from the invites and the calligraphy on small chalk boards, to the bean bags and art materials at the kiddie table, was a collaboration of many great artists from the industry who excitedly worked on making the couple’s dream wedding a reality.

“Aira styled my prep area, I didn’t want a set that looked like a ‘set.’ And Aira is good at that! How to make simple things look really nice. Just the right amount of class and style! When I arrived at my preps place, it simply made me say ‘its going to be a great day!’ It started my day right.”

“Worked with Byron Velasquez a couple of times already, and his works is one of my favorites! Just beautiful. Not only that, he works well with photographers, assists the bride and takes care of the the couple talaga. Years before Toto and I got engaged, he told us ‘Alam ko matagal pa, but I will do your make up on your wedding’ and just like that, he was our 1st wedding supplier haha Forever grateful because he made me feel comfortable with make up and I’m not a make up fan!”

Gideon Hermosa, worked on our ceremony. We really didn’t know what we wanted so we didn’t know what to expect. We just wanted it to look raw, that’s it. So why hire a stylist if you want it raw? Now that’s where his artistry kicks in!! Gids maintained the realness of our location but gave it more kick! Tada! Our ceremony with tall grass and everything else he added there was spot on!

“I told Vatel Manila about this many times and I’ll say it again. It is because of his bouquets that I learned to appreciate flowers. Never was a fan of receiving flowers (even when I was younger), not until I became a wedding photographer and then started seeing Vatel Manila’s work at shoots would always make me wish that it was my bouquet hahaha. Thank you Dylan for making this for me! We were shooting my portraits when they handed the flowers to me, I had to stop the shoot and hugged my own Vatel Manila bouquet.”

“I really wanted a black gold with black diamond ring but after searching far and wide from Manila to HK, it wasn’t available. So Plan B it is white gold with black diamond. Still beautiful. “

WaW Toto and Nicolai2

“Badang Rueda did our reception! For the reception we were keen about the long tables and cascading greens over our tables, and really prayed that the set wont intimidate the guests but would make them feel cozy.”

Trusting new artists. Natalie Lim did the calligraphy and Istorya did the tie clips of the gents and necklaces I gave my girls. I was once a new artist and the couples who trusted me, aaaaah thank you! These two new suppliers were both game and despite the rush work I placed them in they delivered really well. So happy.
I become my bride’s client

My invites was made by Paper Thread Studios, from my bride Pat Felizardo-Ruedas with husband Ian Ruedas. Despite the couple’s pregnancy they agreed to make it for us. I so believe in this couple’s talent, they are so driven and creative! I also got them to do the invites for our workshop last year!

“My robe was from ‘Amelia in Lace’ you can search them on IG, this was made by my bride Tia Bulan-Roco. I was on the search for a prep dress! And oh man was it hard to find a dress to wear for make up and pre portraits. You’re only going to wear it for a while right? But thanks to Tia, I was in a very nice robe. A robe you can still use after the wedding and for honeymoon, wink wink!”

Every detail had a different supplier assigned, but all of them had one concept in mind. According to the guests, the styling of all areas were on-point to the theme which shows just how well everything came together.

W@W’s very own Benz Co-Rana was one of the wedding sponsors for Nicolai and Toto.

If there was anything of huge consideration, it was the weather. There was news about a storm coming on the day of their wedding, but Nicolai and Toto were set on exchanging vows under “that” tree that they were ready and willing to get soaked in the rain when they say their I do’s.

“If the sun shines, then amazing!” Nicolai says, “Our faith wasn’t shaken, we knew that God made that day for us.”

Fortunately, there was not a drop at the time of their wedding.

The guests gamely dressed for the occasion as the couple requested. And even though the place was quite far from the metro, they stayed until the lights were out, dining, drinking, dancing and celebrating with the couple under a blanket of stars.

“Supplier Guests. Just a trivia: almost 180 out of the 300 guests were wedding suppliers.
Every 18th of the month Toto and I would want to celebrate our monthsary but we would always have shoots. The 18th of whichever month is always a hot date. So to have these guys with us… to block our wedding date, not to book shoots, that they chose to celebrate with us was bliss! The people in this photo are people we love to make kulitan with during shoots, people in the industry who inspire us, who helped us and those who saw our love story.”

It helped that the couple was naturally carefree which made everyone else feel the same way. Beer was served right away, along with burger sliders for cocktails. No one minded how long the post-nup shoot was taking because everyone was full and satisfied while they waited.

This may also have a lot to do with the couple handpicking every single one of their guests and refusing to let the dramatics of some relatives affect them.

“Make sure that your guests who you invite are the ones who celebrate with you, and not be the celebrant,” Nicolai advises future brides.

For Nicolai, the best part about being a supplier planning your own wedding is that you have the ability to go crazy with ideas. The photo shoots happened smoothly, even the photographers were enjoying themselves.

And since they’re also friends with the suppliers, everyone got to join the party as well, an opportunity that doesn’t come by often in wedding shoots.

When it comes to the budget, Nicolai admits that beautiful weddings can be costly and that you can expect it to go over your budget. However, she’s quick to assure would-be brides that she’s talked to many other brides before her and they all said that they didn’t regret spending for their weddings.

Just make sure that you pay for a wedding that you really want.

Nicolai’s final word of advice for future brides is this, “Remember that wedding planning is preparation for marriage. It’s all about teamwork. You, your fiance and the Lord. You need patience, understanding, perseverance, fighting procrastination and more. So, when it gets tough, go to the Lord and then talk it out.”

Here are some of the highlights of their wedding:
